Kirstie’s Journey to Balmer Lawn Hotel

Kirstie’s journey to her role as head spa therapist began with her achieving an NVQ level 2 and 3 beauty therapy along with courses to keep up with current spa treatments. She then spent time in a retail background, before transferring her skills in communication and customer service to a hospitality role.

After making the move to hospitality, Kirstie’s career has been spent within several different spas across a range of hotels, allowing her to liaise with different departments, meet new people and improve the overall journey of her customers.

When asked why she chose hospitality, Kirstie said, “I am a social butterfly and the faces you meet every day will always be the number one factor for working within the hospitality industry. I’ve worked within beauty salons and spas, and although a high street beauty salon is very fast-paced and exciting, there’s a sense of home that comes with working in a spa within a bigger family, that being the Balmer Lawn Hotel.”

Kirstie’s Role as Head Spa Therapist

When asked about her duties as a spa therapist here at Balmer Lawn Hotel, Kirstie shared that her typical week includes, “providing treatments to the best of my ability to all guests visiting the Saltus Spa and guiding my team to withhold a respectable reputation.

A few of our team members have worked at the hotel for a substantial amount of years, but some have been off to try another path and eventually returned home to the hotel. This made me feel that my work and knowledge would really be appreciated and utilised, not only to progress the business but my own personal development too.”

Future Plans and Advice

Concerning the future of Balmer Lawn Hotel, Kirstie said “I’m looking forward to seeing the hotel move into a very successful year with a lot of exciting projects on the agenda. The hospitality industry has really taken a hit the last few years, but we’re standing strong and pushing forward harder than ever.”

When it comes to the advice that she would give to those considering a career in hospitality, Kirstie advised to “Be a sponge. There are so many parts of the industry that can be amazing to work in, but it can feel overwhelming choosing your department.

Take in all the information you can. Try every part of the industry that is on offer to you and never stop learning. Be the guest to please the guest. Listen to your customers and remember every day is a new day!”
