Recently at Balmer Lawn Hotel, we have been able to help a wonderful couple celebrate their diamond anniversary 60 years after their 1962 New Forest wedding.

New Forest Wedding | The Couple at Balmer Lawn Hotel
At Balmer Lawn Hotel, we welcomed 83-year-old Peter and 79-year-old Avis Ferguson as they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with us.
For us, this was a highly momentous occasion as in 1962, Avis and Peter chose our venue for their New Forest wedding, and it has been an honour to be a part of their marriage celebrations.
Celebrating in Style at Balmer Lawn Hotel
Treated by their children, Avis and Peter celebrated this incredible milestone with a luxurious weekend escape which included a heart-warming visit from their beloved grandchildren.
As a homage to her 1962 New Forest wedding here at Balmer Lawn Hotel, Avis arrived at our hotel looking stunning in her original wedding dress. To fit the theme and celebrate the couple, we adorned our activities room with a host of decorations, adding to the wow-factor of the event.
Avis and Peter kicked off their romantic weekend by spending some quality time together across our beautiful grounds before being treated to a dedicated anniversary dinner. Our talented kitchen team endeavoured to create a delicious meal for the happy couple, including a stunning replica of their three-tier wedding cake to add further magic to the day.
New Forest Wedding | The Story of Avis and Peter
At Balmer Lawn Hotel, we have been a part of Avis and Peters’s story in many more ways than one. Having grown up in the Brockenhurst area, retired secretary Avis has been involved with the New Forest since the 1930s, often visiting us at Balmer Lawn Hotel and meeting her future bridesmaid in the area.
Peter, on the other hand, was a farm labourer by trade, and enjoyed plenty of visits to our hotel in order to fuel his passion for watching and playing cricket.
When asked about their 60th anniversary celebrations here at Balmer Lawn Hotel, Avis said: “The 60th wedding celebrations were an amazing surprise. Our children were taking us on a surprise weekend, and we were completely unaware of what was to follow.”
“We left Devon on a Friday night, not having any idea what an amazing event it would turn out to be. We stopped for breakfast on Saturday morning to be met by the grandchildren and their partners, where we watched the cricket and played our own version among the ponies on the green. It was an unforgettable day and we’re so grateful to Balmer Lawn Hotel for continuing to provide us with so many happy memories.”
Charlotte Taylor, our events coordinator, said: “It was such a joy-filled day celebrated with those closest to Avis and Peter. The gorgeous couple has a truly special relationship and to mark this monumental occasion at Balmer Lawn Hotel was a privilege for all involved. Avis was as smiley as she was 60 years ago, and swept Peter off his feet as she has done ever since their eyes first locked six decades ago.”
